World AIDS Day
World AIDS Day is observed every year on December 1st.The World Health Organization established World AIDS Day in 1988.
This Tuesday marks the twenty-first World Aids Day, and will be marked by global events around the world to try to raise awareness about HIV and AIDS prevention. It is special. Because, each year it is the only International day of co-ordinated action against AIDS.
In 2005, there were an estimated 440,000 people living with HIV in the Middle East and North Africa. The World Bank launched in November, 2005 a regional strategy to help countries in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) prevent a major surge in the HIV/AIDS infections in the region.”The good news is that we have evidence that the declines we are seeing are due, at least in part, to HIV Prevention,” said Michel Sidibe, Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS executive director in a recent World Health Organization report. In the U.S., the rate of AIDS infection has seen a slight decrease since 2003 levels, say recent statistics from the CDC.
The Red Ribbon is an international symbol of AIDS awareness that is worn by people all year round and particularly around world AIDS day to demonstrate care and concern about HIV and AIDS, and to remind others of the need for their support and commitment.
